Statistics Canada Report on Violence Against Women
Violence Against Women: Statistical Trends
A few highlights:
- women living in Canada's territories are far more likely to be sexually assaulted and murdered by their husbands than those living in the provinces
- rates of reported sexual assault have dropped since 1993
- this may have to do with women's rising economic status, which makes it easier for them to leave an abusive relationship
- the decline could also be the result of the increased use of services by assaulted women, and an increase in the number of treatment programs for violent men
- some 10% of sexual assaults are reported to police
