Statistics Canada Article on Efficiency of Criminal Courts

Last week, Juristat, a publication produced by Statistics Canada, published an article entitled Measuring efficiency in the Canadian adult criminal court system: Criminal court workload and case processing indicators.

The article examines the number of initiated and completed cases, the inventory and age of open cases, completion rates, case processing times, court workload, and backlog.

It also looks at the impact of the July 2016 Supreme Court' of Canadas R. v Jordan decision that laid down new time limits for completing cases in criminal court.

According to the article, since Jordan, case completion rates have risen and the court backlog was reduced.
