Internet Public Library turns 10 years old

The Internet Public Library, or IPL, started out as a 1995 student project at the University of Michigan as part of a project at the School of Information supervised by professor Joseph Janes.

The idea was to transfer the model of a bricks-and-mortar library to the new world of the Web.

And it worked. IPL is considered by many to be the prototype for digital librarianship.

To celebrate the accomplishment, IPL is holding a virtual "open house" on March 17.
